Born on August 3, 1926, Tony Bennett has become one of the greatest and best-loved American music legends of all time. His career in music began during in his teens when he sang while waiting on tables. During World War II, he enlisted in the army but this did not stop him using his musical talents. He joined the military band and performed across Europe. When he left the army, he attended the American Theater Wing School. Bennett’s first official performance was in 1946 at the Shangri-La in Astoria singing alongside trombonist Tyree Glenn at the nightclub. However, it wasn’t until 1949 that Tony Bennett got his big break. Unusually, it wasn’t someone in the music industry that noticed his talent; it was Bob Hope, the comedian. He saw Bennett singing with Pearl Bailey in Greenwich Village, New York City. Hope didn’t like Bennett’s stage name, Joe Bari; nor did he like his real name, Anthony Dominick Benedetto. Thus, the singer became Tony Bennett. The American star has many accolades to his name, including 17 Grammy Awards, 24 Top 40 songs and millions of worldwide record sales. While many singers enjoy only a brief period of success, Bennett has released new albums in five different decades. The singer has toured the world, performing at sell-out concerts across the globe. Bennett’s popularity continued into his 80s. He released ‘Duets: An American Classic’ in celebration of his 80th birthday and followed this with ‘Duets II’ to celebrate his 85th birthday in 2011. For these albums, he collaborated with stars including Amy Winehouse, Michael Bublé, Elton John, Barbara Streisand, Joh Mayer and Aretha Franklin. Today, Tony Bennett is one of the few artists in the world to have a musical career and accomplishments spanning over seven decades.
